ADI Screens Help Mark Momentous Olympic Handover
Friday, September 12, 2008 at 4:02PM ADI provided LED screens to two major UK cities to broadcast the closing of the Beijing Olympics and the official handover to Britain for the 2012 Olympics.
Crowds gather in front of the stage and ADI's iCONIC 60 in Leicester's Humberstone GateLeicester and Birmingham both played host to ADI iCONIC mobile LED screens, which formed part of the celebrations throughout city centres across the UK over the weekend of the 23rd-24th August.
In Leicester, ADI had already provided a 30m² ground supported LED screen throughout the Olympics fortnight. The screen – situated on main shopping street Humberstone Gate – showed live coverage from the BBC from 8am to 8pm each day. For the closing weekend, Leicester City Council installed a stage, so ADI replaced the 30m² screen with a huge 60m² iCONIC 60 mobile LED; its raised screen meaning that it could be placed behind the stage and viewed over the top. Throughout the weekend, the stage and screen were to prove focal points in the city centre, with a number of bands and acts appearing.
ADI's iCONIC 15 in Birmingham's Victoria Square
Meanwhile, at Birmingham, ADI provided their iCONIC 15 double-sided screen, which was positioned on the corner of Victoria Square. As well as the screen, ADI provided a three camera outside broadcast unit, with the BBC providing Cameramen and Director to broadcast live events from the Square onto the screen. These included a choir as well as a number of sporting activities and a Chinese dragon procession.
On Sunday, as the Mayor of Beijing handed the Olympic torch to the Mayor of London, both cities joined in with cities across the UK with the national “Sing the Nation” campaign to mark the momentous occasion.
The weekend’s events concluded at around 5pm, enabling ADI to lower the screens and be offsite shortly afterwards.
