All's quiet at Wembley with shortly before the startThe world’s largest one day race, The Nike+ Human Race is a 10km road race which took place in cities around the world on 31st August 2008. In total, 26 cities across the globe took part, and London provided over 17,000 runners for the groundbreaking event, which also featured some of the world’s hottest music acts playing live prior to each race.
Beyond running and music, the Nike+ Human Race was also an opportunity for participants to run for a worthy cause and support the three official Nike+ Human Race charitable partners: the Lance Armstrong Foundation, WWF and the UN refugee agency's ninemillion.org campaign.
ADI were contracted by PR and Events agency Slice to provide three of their iCONIC mobile LED screens for the London event, with two huge iCONIC 100 screens inside the stadium and a further, smaller iCONIC 12 positioned outside. Arriving onsite at midday on Saturday, ADI began the task of positioning the giant iCONIC 100 screens either side of the purpose-built stage, before setting up the iCONIC 12 near the finish line outside the famous arena the following day.
Moby gets 17,000 runners ready to go! Prior to the beginning of Sunday’s race, the growing crowds were treated to a fantastic live music concert, with sets from Pendulum and the legendary Moby energising and entertaining the runners. ADI’s giant iCONIC 100s showed live coverage of the music via an onsite outside broadcast team, as well as occasional live footage from other Nike+ Human Race events across the world.
At 5pm the first wave of the 17,000 runners set off around the 10km course. In a unique twist the 17,000 runners were racing not only against each other, but also against runners across the world, with the average time for each contestant logged and then compared across the 26 competitor cities. Once the race got under way, ADI’s iCONIC 12 screen – positioned near the finishing line on Wembley’s Olympic Way – showed live footage of the race and entertained the families and friends of the runners who had braved the wet conditions to cheer them on.
The event drew to a close at around 9.30pm and – once all of the global times had been calculated – London finished in an incredible 2nd place, with an average time of just 57’ 47” for the 10km course.
