ADI Screens Help Newham to Celebrate Under the Stars
Thursday, September 17, 2009 at 1:37PM ADI provided LED screens and outside broadcast facilities for Under the Stars, a free four-night extravaganza organised for the community by Newham Council.
Huge crowds for Saturday nightThe event, which has been running for ten years, saw over thirty thousand people flock to East Ham to enjoy four days of entertainment, with a different theme each evening.
ADI were contracted by event organisers Centre Stage Productions to supply three LED screens for the event and a four camera outside broadcast unit which provided live coverage as well as a mixture of video and computer graphics throughout the event.
ADI were able to provide Centre Stage Productions & Newham Council with a unique solution, using their iCONIC 25 mobile LED screens for the two main screens that flanked the stage, running main show content. In previous years Newham Council had used flown screens, which meant constructing unattractive trussing structures on either side of the stage before building the screens beneath and raising them with winches. In contrast, ADI’s iCONIC 25s were able to reverse into place and be up and running within 20 minutes of arrival – a process requiring just a single person. With their small footprint and low trailer base, they provided a far more elegant and efficient solution.
“ADI gave us a cost effective and good looking solution to our video needs, supporting the Council in developing their footage and being both professional and friendly on site.”
Chris Seal, Senior Production Manager at Centre Stage Productions

The mobile screens were complemented by a flown screen, used as an onstage backdrop. ADI ran different content to the three screens, with the two main screens showing live coverage, whilst the screen stage played out predominantly pre-recorded video and graphics to match the onstage entertainment. During breaks between acts ADI ran community messages from Newham Council and the event’s sponsors.
With a different theme for each of the four nights, Under the Stars really did provide something for everyone. The event kicked off on Thursday with a night of music from the 40s and 50s, with a poignant flag-raising ceremony to commemorate 70 years since the declaration of the Second World War. The moving occasion was attended by the borough's Royal British Legion members, many of who had served in the 1939-1945 war.
A beautiful evening on Thursday
The following two nights celebrated Asian music and 50 years of Motown, before Sunday’s finale, featuring a rousing performance by The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, before a dazzling fireworks display concluded the festivities.
ADI Business Development Manager Harj Virdee commented: “Under the Stars was a hugely enjoyable show to be involved with, particularly with the role that it plays in the local community. The iCONIC 25s were ideally suited to this type of application and meant a far more elegant look for the event, and one that was much easier and quicker to setup.”
